The Romance of the Rose

According to Greek legend, roses were always white until Aphrodite’s lover Adonis was attacked by a wild boar and fatally injured.

Seeing Adonis in pain, she ran to help him but on her way she pricked her foot on a rose thorn and her blood turned the petals red.

Nowadays it is traditional for lovers to send red roses to their sweethearts as a romantic gesture and token of their love.
